Winter Shepherd

Textured Oil on Canvas. 48 x 72 in.

The Story of “Winter Shepherd:”

South Dakota ground blizzards can be quite scary! “Winter Shepherd” was painted from a photo I took in January during such a blizzard just northeast of Yankton, South Dakota. I will never forget that drive! The view was randomly entirely blocked by blowing snow. Many prayers offered up! During that drive, I knew these were uniquely desolate winter prairie scenes. It felt like holy ground traveling through a land when not another soul was around. Only we were there to marvel at this stalwart, lone Cottonwood tree braving that frigid field. I felt like this tree was faithfully overseeing a “flock” of hay bales.  I took this shot and named the tree “Winter Shepherd” on the spot and just knew I had to paint it.

The peace of our simple, soul-soothing land as well as the encouragement to be found in the resilience of those who have persevered in it–like this tree–profoundly inspire me.  It is my joy to celebrate the serene beauty of South Dakota, and my hope is that you also will enjoy even just a few moments of peace, comfort, and encouragement while standing in front of my painting.
