Description
This painting has sold, but it is graciously on loan from Admiral Lyle Bien (Ret.) and included in my solo Exhibition: Dazzling Dakota, at Center for Western Studies, Augustana University, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Oil Painting on textured Antique South Dakota Cabinet Door. Overall Size: 17 x 39 in. Painting Size: 12 x 33 in.
Inspiration for this painting was taken from an absolutely stunning photo of wild horses on the plains near Sturgis, South Dakota.* This was the first of my Antique Architectural Elements combined with an original oil painting. The wild horses reference was the perfect match to this cabinet frame, I thought!
I didn’t bother to count the hours it took to remove the many and stubborn layers of paint to reveal that wonderful bare dry old-growth pine on the edge of the antique cabinet door which I repurposed into this fabulous frame! I preserved the many layers of paint on the back – which is so fun to show! I LOVE imagining the history of that door and remaking it into a treasure that highlights the grandeur of our state.
This painting is currently on display in my solo exhibition, “Dazzling Dakota,” at Center for Western Studies (CWS) at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The show runs through April 25, 2025. It has sold, but prints are still available for purchase. CWS is located at 2121 S Summit Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57197. They are open Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-5:00PM or by appointment.
